The Sons Of Rest Building

 

The Sons of Rest had been derelict and had been damaged. It was one of the biggest jobs of the park restoration and is now back to its former glory.

A mid 20th Century shelter of rough-cast brick and tile construction (disused, 2000) which was built in 1937 to replace a timber shelter constructed in 1930 by the Sons of Rest, a society for retired men. The Handsworth Park Sons of Rest shelter was the first of several constructed in Birmingham parks. Source

In the redevelopment of the park in 2006, the project included the conservation and extension of the Sons of Rest (a war veteran’s social hall). The hall was significantly remodeled and extended to accommodate an education facility, a common language of materials and detail was developed across the new building for the park. Source
